Rouguelike games are a genre of games which are loosely based on a game called Rogue. Roguelike games are the predecesors of the modern RPG. Examples of the Roguelike genre would include Rogue, Moria, Angband (and it's many derivatives), NetHack? and many others. There is much debate on what exactly defines the genre, though most Roguelike games are text based, using ASCII symbols to represent dungeon walls and creatures. Typically, the player is represented by the '@' symbol. Roguelike games are turn based, and use a complex control scheme where most keys on the keyboard are used for various commands.

Roguelikes typically incorporate randomly generated dungeons and multitudes of different creatures and items. Many unique weapons and enemies are also a trademark of a good Roguelike.

Egoboo is an attempt to take the depth and scope of a Roguelike game, and translate it into a realtime game using simple 3d graphics.
